Salcombe Gin
70cl
Salcombe Gin is a delicious, super smooth, hand distilled gin made from thirteen carefully selected botanicals distilled with the finest English wheat spirit and blended with pure Dartmoor water to produce a gin of extraordinary quality. They distil their gin on a pair of beautiful 60l copper stills named Hoshi and Provident that have been handmade for them in Portugal, producing only 65 bottles at a time. Each batch is distilled with an unrivalled passion, care and attention to detail, and blended from typically 6 still runs together with Dartmoor water to produce consistently perfect gin. They don’t compromise on quality, period. They use the one shot distillation method and distil their gin according to the ‘London Dry’ standard, although they like to think of it as ‘Devon Dry’, very similar to London Dry with the addition of sunshine!
The gin has a unique and elegant citrus forward flavour that is refreshing yet perfectly balanced with the botanicals working in harmony. Inspired by the history of the Salcombe ‘Fruiters’ that imported citrus fruits and spices to England from the Azores, West Indies and Mediterranean in the 19th century, they use a precise blend of grapefruit, lemons and limes to give their gin a refreshing citrus edge. They hand peel their citrus fruits every morning immediately prior to distillation for extra freshness and to ensure they capture the citrus oils at their best. Liquorice adds a touch of sweetness and green cardamom helps lengthen the finish without ever being overly dominant, whilst chamomile flowers and bay leaf provide a balanced floral note.
These citrus and floral aromas and flavours work in harmony with the heady, earthy and resinous pine notes of the finest Macedonian juniper, selected for their high limonene content, combined with the warming spiced citrus notes from English coriander seeds grown by one of their suppliers and selected to their specification. Cubeb berries from Java provide fruity peppery heat balanced with warming spice from cinnamon bark. All these come together to produce a stunning and perfectly balanced gin.
